#jotd Jewelry of the Day

I am learning so much about jewelry and gems and I want to start sharing some beautiful gems that aren't as well known.

The Blue ring is Tanzanite. It's named for Tanzania where it was discovered in the late 1960's. It was a less expensive substitute for Sapphire but it is now sought out because of it's beauty and rarity. Tanzanite is found in a 4 square kilometer area in Tanzania and nowhere else in the world!

The Green ring is Green Tourmaline or Verdelite.
Tourmalines occur in many colors and some are bi-color or even tri-color.
The most well known bi-color tourmaline is red and green and is known as Watermelon Tourmaline.
Verdelite is said to bring a joy for life. It will also become electrically charged if heated or rubbed and will attract dust. Dutch traders of the 1700's  used tourmaline to pull ash from their smoking pipes and today, many flat irons for hair are coated with tourmaline to make the hair shinier!
